Region 6 has lost one of its beloved members, Inez
Tarrant.
Inez, a long-time resident of Jones Creek, Texas, passed away Thursday, April 13, 2006. She was born March 3, 1919, in Senate, Texas, to Ed F. and Willie J. Owen. She was the oldest in a family of nine girls and two boys.
Inez was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Tarrant; son, Clyde; and sisters, Irene, Mickey, Ollie, and Wilma. She is survived by sons, Edgar Tarrant of Pearland and James Tarrant of Freeport; sisters Ruby Jager, Peggy Owen, Mary Garbett, and Darlene Buck; and brothers William "Sonny" Owen and Johnny Owen.
Inez was a Charter Member of the Jones Creek Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for years. She was a Life Member of the American Hemerocallis Society and the Brazosport Daylily Society. She received numerous awards and national recognition for her daylilies.
Inez and Grace Alexander were very close friends and roomed together at the Regional Meetings and National Conventions. They shared a record of never having missed a Regional Meeting for 29 years.
Inez registered 50 daylilies. Her first registration was Hemerocallis 'Life Is Fragile' (1973). H. 'Wind Frills' (1978) is grown and well known across the nation and was at the top of the Region 6 Popularity Poll in 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1996. For many years it was in the top ten on the Popularity Poll.
In 1993, Inez was awarded the AHS Region 6 Service Award. In 2001, H. 'Lacy Marionette' (1987) won the AHS Harris Olson Spider Award for best Spider.
When my wife, Mary, and I first met Inez at a 1984 meeting of the Brazosport Daylily Society we knew we had found a treasure. Upon learning that we knew nothing about this "daylily", Inez took us under her wings as a mother hen would and began to nourish us in the ways of the daylily world. She did for us what she did for countless others in Region 6 for many years. She unselfishly provided hours of thoughtful training from her vast store of experience. Inez's method of drawing a person into the garden and making them think about what they were viewing was intriguing.
Inez tirelessly demonstrated to the members of our local club and the Houston clubs the intricate details involved in the proper grooming of a prize winning exhibition entry. Inez's many ribbons are a compliment to her meticulous skills as an exhibitor.
Inez will be greatly missed.
