A HISTORY OF THE GULF COAST
DAYLILY SOCIETY
by Margaret Jones
(reprinted from the Spring 1993 Region 6
Daylily Newsletter)
A group of garden club judges and interested daylily growers met at the Flying Chef Restaurant, Nederland, Texas, on March 9, 1956, for the purpose of organizing a daylily club. Charter members were the 21 members present and 5 not present who paid their dues of $1. Of these, only one is still living, Mrs. Kate Pessarra.
Mamie Schulz was the first president. Among the charter members were Lucille Williamson, who won numerous AHS awards, Mrs. H. R. Hunsucker, and Inez Coffman-Young, .
At the April 1956 meeting the members voted to be called the Gulf Coast Hemerocallis Society; however, years later the name was changed to Gulf Coast Daylily Society.
