Gulf Coast Daylily Society History
A group of garden club judges and interested daylily growers met at the Flying Chef Restaurant, Nederland, Texas, on March 9, 1956, for the purpose of organizing a daylily club. Charter members were the 21 members present and 5 not present who paid their dues of $1. Maymie Schulze was the first President. Among the charter members were Lucille Williamson, who won numerous AHS awards; Mrs. H. R. Hunsucker; and Inez Coffman-Young. At the April 1956 meeting the members voted to be called the Gulf Coast Hemerocallis Society. In 1985, the name of the club was changed to the Gulf Coast Daylily Society.
The club's membership was made up of growers from Baytown, Beaumont, Bridge City, Groves, Jasper, Kountze, Nederland, Newton, Port Arthur, Port Neches, Orange, Roganville, Silsbee, and Vidor.
The club hosted the Region 6 Meetings in 1962, 1971, 1978, 1985, 1991, 1997, 2003, and 2006.
The club disbanded in November 5, 2011 due to the advanced age of its members.
